Iron Infusion in Richmond close to Melbourne CBD

Iron Infusions

At Yarra Medical, we provide iron infusion consultations and treatment from our clinic in Abbotsford, near Richmond and just minutes from Melbourne CBD.

If you have been told you may have low iron, or you’re experiencing symptoms such as fatigue, low energy, or poor concentration, an iron infusion may be considered after assessment by one of our doctors.

What is an Iron Infusion?

An iron infusion is a medical treatment used to deliver iron directly into the bloodstream through an intravenous (IV) line.

It may be recommended when iron deficiency has been confirmed and oral iron supplements are not suitable, not well tolerated, or have not been effective.

At Yarra Medical, iron infusions are only provided following a consultation with a GP to ensure the treatment is appropriate for your individual circumstances.

Iron Infusion Fees

Please refer to our Fees page for current consultation and treatment costs.

The infusion itself typically takes around 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the treatment plan recommended by your doctor.

Before your infusion, you will need an initial consultation, which usually takes around 10 to 15 minutes. During this appointment, your doctor will review your symptoms, medical history, and any relevant blood test results.

Once your doctor has confirmed that an iron infusion is appropriate, our reception team can help you book your infusion appointment.

Iron infusions at Yarra Medical are generally available Monday to Friday between 9:30am and 3:00pm.

During an iron infusion, a small IV line is inserted into a vein, usually in the arm. The iron is mixed with fluid and administered slowly over a set period of time.

This allows iron to enter the bloodstream directly, rather than passing through the digestive system as oral supplements do.

For some patients, this may be a suitable option when oral iron has not been effective or has caused side effects.

Iron deficiency is common and can occur for a range of reasons.

Iron plays an important role in helping red blood cells carry oxygen around the body. When iron stores are low, some people may experience symptoms such as:

  • Fatigue
  • Low energy
  • Reduced concentration
  • Headaches
  • Feeling lightheaded
  • Shortness of breath with exertion

These symptoms can also be caused by many other conditions, so it’s important not to self-diagnose. A consultation and appropriate blood tests are needed to determine whether iron deficiency is present and whether treatment is required.

In some cases, oral iron supplements may be enough. In others, your doctor may recommend an iron infusion.

Not everyone with low iron needs an infusion. The most appropriate treatment depends on your symptoms, iron levels, medical history, and how well you tolerate oral supplements.

An iron infusion may be considered when:

  • Oral iron supplements cause gastrointestinal side effects
  • Oral iron has not adequately improved iron levels
  • There are conditions that may affect iron absorption
  • More rapid iron replacement is clinically appropriate

Your doctor will discuss the most suitable treatment option for your situation.

There are a number of possible causes of iron deficiency, including:

  • Low dietary iron intake
  • Reduced absorption of iron
  • Increased iron requirements, such as during pregnancy
  • Blood loss, including heavy periods or gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Certain chronic medical conditions

Identifying the underlying cause of iron deficiency is an important part of treatment and ongoing care.
